Putting health into the heart of design

Choosing Natural Materials

Choosing Natural Materials

Natural materials will bring warmth and a holistic sense to your home. Their authenticity, texture and serene colours can help create a sense of wholeness.

Choosing natural materials can mean there are less chemicals involved in the production process but with crops like cotton they are water intensive and involve a lot of pesticide-use so be sure to only buy organic.

Examples of natural materials in home accessories:

  • willow and seagrass baskets

  • hand-thrown pottery objects

  • water hyacinth storage units

  • vintage items and antiques

Examples of natural materials in home textiles:

  • woollen, organic cotton, linen throws and tableware

  • linen and organic cotton curtains

  • linen, organic cotton and silk bedding

  • organic cotton macrame

  • coir, bamboo, sisal, jute rugs

Examples of natural materials in flooring and building materials:

  • wool, cork, paper, hemp insulation

  • lime plaster

  • sustainable wood - look for FSC or PEFC

  • stripped and oiled or reclaimed floor boards

  • marmoleum, linoleum and cork flooring

Examples of natural materials in furnishings:

  • metal, sustainable wood or bamboo

  • vintage items and antiques

Try and reduce your exposure to fabrics that have performances attached to them eg. ‘non-iron’, ‘‘water-resistant’, ‘stain-proof’ and so on.
